Are you a potential PGWP applicant completing your studies online?
Under normal circumstances, online study did not qualify for Post-Graduation Work Permit. International students have been in a fix since the beginning of the pandemic and the subsequent transfer to an online mode of study. However, in light of the pandemic, Canada had permitted international students to complete 100% of their studies online from outside Canada and still be eligible for the PGWP. This measure was to end on December 31, 2021 but has now been extended until August 31, 2022. Therefore, International students can study online until August 31, 2022, and have their study be counted towards eligibility for the PGWP.
This rule applies even in cases where the student has chosen to complete more than 1 program. The caveat to this rule being that the programs were ongoing or have commenced between March 2020 and Summer 2022. It is vital that the program must be with a Designated Learning Institution along with other PGWP guidelines and requirements. The length of the study is essential in determining the validity of the PGWP. Canadian Education and Work experience play a major role in a subsequent immigration application.
Skilled experience gained while on PGWP would count towards the experience required for making a permanent resident application under the Canadian Experience Class. A PGWP is a one-time opportunity without an opportunity for extension.
